The Duluth Archaeology Center (DAC) specializes in prehistoric archaeology but also conduct projects dealing with historic archaeology. The owners of DAC are all experienced archaeologists who have working in Minnesota, Wisconsin and North Dakota for a combined 60 years. We meet all requirement to hold licenses to conduct archaeological surveys and excavations in Minnesota, Wisconsin and North Dakota. We provide the following archaeological services for our clients:
Searches of existing literature for known historic properties.
Development of cultural resource management plans for any size project.
Field reconnaissance surveys to locate unknown historic sites.
Evaluation for significance of archaeological sites.
Mitigation of project effects for archaeological sites.
GEOMORPHOLOGY
The Duluth Archaeology Center also conducts geomorphological surveys to determine soil types and land formation processes. Geomorphic studies conducted include: small diameter soil coring, 4" bucket auger coring, and trenching. We have a geomophologist on staff that has been working in Minnesota and North Dakota for 10 years.
LABORATORY ANALYSIS
The Duluth Archaeology Center also provides a variety of laboratory analysis for clients. Susan Mulholland has specialized in phytoliths since 1977 and has conducted phytolith analysis for projects throughout the United States. DAC also conducts grain size and loss-on-ignition studies on sediment samples. Jennifer Hamilton has specialized in the ceramics of northern Minnesota and Wisconsin since 1997. She has also conducted ceramic petrography studies on a variety of samples. Stephen Mulholland has specialized in the lithics of the upper midwest since 1981.
