The Duluth Archaeology Center (DAC) is owned by Susan C. Mulholland, Stephen L. Mulholland and Jennifer R Hamilton.  DAC is located at 5910 Fremont Street, Suite 1 in Duluth, Minnesota.  We can be reached by phone (218)624-5489, fax (218) 249-0765 or by email at archcenter@aol.com.  

DAC was founded in November of 2000 after the Archaeometry Laboratory at the University of Minnesota Duluth was closed.  All three owners once worked for the Archaeometry Laboratory.  All of DAC's owners and key personnel meet SHPO standards for field supervisor and/or Principal Investigator.



Education: Susan C. Mulholland recieved a B.A. in Earth Sciences/Geology in 1976 from Bridgewater State College, Massachusetts.  She went on to recieve both her M.S. (1979) and Ph.D. (1987) from the University of Minnesota Ancient Studies (Interdisciplinary Archaeology) program.  Susan specializes in Phytolith analysis as well as prehistoric archaeology.  (Photo at left is of phytoliths.) 

Experience and Qualifications: From 1987-2001 Susan was the Associate Director and Senior Scientist at the Archaeometry Laboratory, University of MN, Duluth.  She also worked as an archaeologist (GS-9) at the Superior National Forest, Duluth, MN from 2001-2005.  She has also been an adjunct assistant professor at both the Univesity of Minnesota, Minneapolis (1992-2001) and the University of Minnesota, Duluth (1990+).  She has served  as a senior affiliate member of the graduate faculty in Anthropology at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis since 2005.  She has been the President and Principal Investigator for DAC since 2000.

Fieldwork: Since 1987 Susan has served as the Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI, and Project Director for various phase I surverys, phase II evaluations, and phase III site mitigations in Minnesota, Wisconsin and North Dakota.  She has also served as PI and Project Director for the St. Louis River Hydroelectric Project since 1990.  This project includes phase I surveys, phase II site evaluations, phase III site mitigation, Cultural Resource Management Plans, curation and site monitoring.


Education: Stephen L. Mulholland recieved a B.A. in Anthropology in 1981 from the University of North Dakota.  He went on to recieved a M.S. in Interdisciplinary Archaeological Studies.  Stephen specializes in lithic analysis as well as prehistoric archaeology.

Experience and Qualifications: Stephen worked as an archaeological technician (GS 4 - 7) for the Superior National Forest, Duluth, MN from 1982-1994.  He was a crew and lab supervisor at the Archaeometry Laboratory, University of Minnesota, Duluth from 1995-2001.  He was an instructor at Northland College, Ashland, WI in 1996 and at the University of Wisconsin, Superior in 2002.  He has been the field director at DAC since 2000.

Fieldwork: Stephen has been conducting phase I surveys and phase II and III excavations since 1979. He has worked as a field supervisor for surveys and excavations for the past 20 years in MN, WI, and ND. He is currently working as a principal investigator and field director.  He meets SHPO and Federal standards for archaeological field supervisor and Principal Investigator.


Education: Jennifer R. Hamilton recieved a B.A. in both Geology and Anthropology from the University of Minnesota, Duluth in 1995.  She went on to recieve a M.A. in Interdisciplinary Archaeological Studies in 2003.  She specializes in ceramic analysis and prehistoric archaeology.

Experience and Qualifications: Jennifer worked as a research assistant at the Archaeometry Laboratory, University of Minnesota Duluth from 1995 to 2002.  While there she worked as both field crew and later as a field and lab supervisor.  From 2000 to present she has worked as a field supervisor and office/account manager for DAC.

Fieldwork: In 1990 - 1991 Jennifer worked as a volunteer at two excavations in MN with the Passport in Time Program.  Since then she has worked on multiple phase I surveys and phase II and III excavations in MN, WI and ND.  She meets SHPO and Federal standards for archaeological field supervisor.



Education and Experience: M. Patrice Farrell recieved a M.A. in Geography in 1992 from the University of Cincinnati.  She went on to recieve her Ph.D. in Geography with an emphasis on Soil Geography in 1997 from the University of Cincinnati.  Pat worked as a Co-PI and Geomorphic Director at the Archaeometry Laboratory from 1999-2001 and at DAC from 2001+

Fieldwork: Pat has worked on multiple geomorphological surveys for MN Department of Transportation projects in Minnesota and North Dakota.  She has also worked in Mexico, Belize and Guatamala and is currently working on a project in Sri Lanka.  Pat meets Iowa's 'Guidelines for Geomorphological Studies in Support of Archaeological Investigations."
